Database crashing suddenly

Issue Summary

Very suddenly, my database crashed. Everything was functioning relatively normal. I was disabling and enabling plugins trying to squash another issue when suddenly I got the “Error connecting to database” Wordpress screen:

Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost . This could mean your host’s database server is down.

The error popped up as I was attempting to reactivate a plugin.

Troubleshooting Questions

I made a clone of the site, fired it up, and everything was working. It was in the exact same state as the original site was prior to the failure, where a plugin I had just disabled was in fact disabled in the cloned site. To see if the issue was with the plugin, I reactivated that same plugin on the cloned site, and everything worked perfectly, no problem.

One other thing that may be worth noting is that I’ve had ongoing issues trying to connect to Adminer on the original site. I will frequently lose connections. Something may have been amiss with the original site’s DB since I set up the site at the beginning of January.
