Hey guys! I recently tried reinstalling Local by Flywheel and when on the installation screen, It says "There is already a pre-user installation.(D:\Local by Flywheel) Will reinstall/upgrade.

Once I click on install, I get a "Installation Aborted Setup was not completed successfully.

I tried the download option for anyone who uses this computer (all users) and changed file location. Still get the same error message

I deleted all folders (to the best of my knowledge) for Local and even went so far as to format my SSD!

I am in the exact same situation. It does not help you, i know, but I hope that we will find a solution.

Something about this sounds like what is described in this thread:

I wonder if thereā€™s a lingering Windows Registry Key that is causing issues. @patd and @AbdiazizNAli ā€“ can you try the solution in that thread which is to install CCleaner and try to uninstall and clean out any registry keys that may have been left behind?

I tried with tools in CCleaners but it is not able to delete the file LOCAL 5.9.7 that is left in my computer. It says that it canā€™t be found.

After running cccleaner and getting that message ā€“ have you tried restarting the computer a few times?

Windows can be finiky when things like registry keys are corrupted and restarts can help flush things out.

Will try once I get the chance and update you guys.

Nope ā€¦ after a few restarts the file remains and the installation is always impossible; frustrating !

Thereā€™s got to be a fix somehowā€¦ this is my favorite program to use :confounded: I donā€™t want to keep being locked out of local.

What specific version are you trying to install?

In the original screenshot, I see that it mentions:

D:\Local by Flywheel

Thatā€™s the name of the older, ā€œClassicā€ version of Local ā€“ v3.3.0. The more recent versions of Local are sometimes called ā€œLightningā€ (v5.9.8 is the most recent).

I know that sometimes Local has issues being installed on a different partition. If you open a file explorer and navigate to the D: folder ā€“ do you see that folder of Local by Flywheel?

You might try deleting that specific folder, restarting the computer and then try installing the latest version of Local that can be downloaded from here:

I experienced this as well, hopefully, this will get resolved and a fix providedā€¦anyone? Sitting here spending hours and hours trying to figure out how to get local by flywheel installed again after the 5.9.8 upgrade FAIL so I can continue working on my site.
Iā€™ve tried removing the errant registry entry and restarting
Iā€™ve upgraded Oracle VirtualBox to see if that would help
Iā€™ve uninstalled and reinstalled
Iā€™ve tried going back to 5.9.7
none of these things helped

Other notes: it seems I had a Windows update since the last install of Local -a suspect Iā€™m sure
Trying to start the Local image in Virtualbox gives me some errors

===================

Thatā€™s the custom name I gave the file when I first downloaded it. This was about a month ago so the version I downloaded was the most recent at the time.

Iā€™ve deleted every file and when so far as to format my second SSD that the program was installed on. I didnā€™t do the quick format instead opted to go with the regular format to insure that absolutely every file was deleted. after a few hours, the format completed and its still coming up with the same error message : /

Currently going through a second wipe this time with CCleaner Professional : / going to check back in a few hours when its completed.

I was finally able to find a second and third registry entry referring to the uninstall location of the software, one for the previous version and one for the new version, once I deleted the key, I was able to get the install working, it installed and I was able to bring up my sites.
I had done other things, but I donā€™t think it had anything to do with it. For instance, I recreated my host network adapter in Virtualbox based on the error I had reported, but this did not help. I also went in and enabled Hyper-V, but this did not help. I saw that Oracle Virtualbox would work with Hyper-v, but with a performance degradation. I think Iā€™ll try going back and disabling hyper-V because I am experiencing performance degradation. Anyway, I wanted to update here so others could take a look and see if they can fix their issue.
I opened the registry using regedit, then CTRL-F to use Find, then searched for Flywheel. There were numerous entries of course, but we are only after a couple of entries referring to the uninstall locations, for our previous version and for the 5.9.8 version. I deleted the entries. Please proceed carefully, editing the registry can do serious damage, so backup your system first. I took a screen shot of one of the entries similar to the ones I deleted previously before the working install placed this back in. I did not delete any of the other entries for Flywheel, just the ones referring to the uninstall.

Thanks for following up with that info and the screenshot @shoffmaster!!

@AbdiazizNAli and @pat ā€“ are you able to double check the steps that shoffmaster took and see if there are additional registry keys in place?

Thanks, I did as you advised, deleting the uninstall registry keys, I rebooted after that and could proceed with the installation
