Trying to put a snippet in my child theme functions.php and get an error message telling me I can’t. Help please.

Where are you trying to update that file?
If you right-click on the site in Local and select “Reveal in Finder” that should open a file explorer. From there, you can navigate to the theme’s functions.php file and open it with your text editor of choice which should allow you to edit the file without any problems.
Can you give that a shot and let us know how it goes?
